Laser hair removal is an alternative to typical hair removal methods such as shaving and waxing. This alternative offers great convenience, as treatments are needed far less frequently. In addition, with repeated sessions, laser hair removal can harness longterm results, requiring only annual or biannual treatments.
What is laser hair removal and how does it work?
When performed by an experienced clinician, laser hair removal destroys the follicle of hair. It is an extremely targeted treatment and does not affect the skin. Using heat to kill the hair follicles with a concentrated beam of light, laser hair treatments help delay future hair growth. Specifically, the laser targets pigment in the hair or skin, so if skin color and laser settings aren’t calibrated appropriately, the skin can be burned.
Is laser hair removal safe?
Overall, hair removal is a safe procedure. To prevent injury to the eyes, eye protection is critical with laser hair removal. When the laser is in process, both you and the technician performing the procedure should always be wearing goggles.
The other safety concern is exposure to the laser the smoke, vapor and particles released while lasering, known as the laser plume. This presents the biggest risk to those who perform the procedure and are frequently exposed to the plumes. The very small dust particles can potentially irritate your airways after continued exposure. Although it is not necessary for the patient receiving the treatment, any practitioner performing laser hair removal should wear a surgical mask to minimize a potential reaction.
To prevent pain and discomfort, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area when you get laser hair removal. A handheld device is then moved across the targeted area that treats the area with intense laser pulses. Most patients are able to tolerate the treatment very well as the sensation may feel hot or similar to how a rubber band snapping the skin feels.
It is completely normal to see redness, swelling, and/or bumpiness in the treated area right after treatment. It is not serious and usually subsides on its own within 24 hours. Immediately following treatment, you can return to work and other normal activities. Lotions with fragrances and self-tanners should be avoided for 72 hours after receiving treatment.
As your skin can be extra sensitive to the sun after laser hair removal, avoid sun exposure on that area for two weeks. If you go outside, make sure to use sunscreen on the treated areas.
How permanent is laser hair removal?
Permanent hair removal is achieved when the hair follicle is completely destroyed. However, the hair will eventually regrow if the hair follicle is only damaged. Most people who receive a laser hair removal treatment can typically expect some hair regrowth within a couple of months. Once the hair returns, they can return for more hair removal treatments. After a number of sessions, treatments are usually only required every six to twelve months.
Can I shave or wax before my hair removal treatment?
Since the laser needs some length of hair to work with, it is best to not shave or wax for four to six weeks prior to the hair removal appointment. This enables enough length for the laser hair removal to be successful.
